Fabulous Jazz Standards, Contemporary, South African Classics and Soul
Vocalist, dancer, drummer, percussionist and songwriter Neliswa Sampi Mxunyelwa, born in Worcester in 1979, started singing at the age of 8.
Her stage name, SANGE, depicts her performance presence. It means “hug” as she embraces and takes care of her audience by healing their souls through music. Sange performs a wide range of music from jazz to famous South African covers and her own original songs.
Sange’s parents are from the rural areas of Cofimuaba in a village called Qamata at eMthonjeni in Eastern Cape. This is where her roots are, and where the traditional elements in her music come from (Umngqungqo)
In her writing she combines traditional styles with jazz and pop approaches. Her lyrical content covers a wide social spectrum. From self-assertion to the hardship of her people’s livelihood and their most joyful experiences.
From an early age, Sange was involved in singing, taking part in the church and community choirs.
She started performing with a band called ‘Township Connection’ as a lead singer and dancer with whom she travelled to Saudi Arabia.
She was also the lead vocalist for recording group Inkokheli. With them, Sange performed extensively in venues such as G Spot, V & A Hotel, Green Dolphin, Manenbergs’ Jazz Café, Spier, as well as parliament private functions.
As a backing vocalist and dancer, Sange toured the Eastern Cape and South American countries such as Brazil, Chile and Argentina with renowned artists such as Lungiswa Plaatjies and Don Laka.
Sange is also a member of a musical show entitled Under African Skies aka Diamonds and Dust with whom she performed around Western Cape, Sun City, Eastern Cape, Johannesburg, Durban, Barhain (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Turkey and the Caribbean Islands.
She has also taken part in the Jazzathon since 2001 with different acts such as Inkokheli, Prompt Project, Lunguiswa Plaatjies and with her own band.
She currently enjoys regular performances at Moyo, Spier in Cape Town and entertaining at corporate events with her original project.
Sange is very passionate about exploring new grounds in her musical career. She studied Speech and Drama at CADA (Cape Academy of Dramatic Arts) and at Prompt music Collage (Professional Music and Performance Technology).
She founded the cultural group Buka Entertainers aimed at nurturing the talents of the youth through dance, music and drama.
