Gumboot Dancers

During the South African Goldrush and Diamond Rush, Miners had to work under very harsh conditions – forbidden to speak to one another and often chained to their work stations , below ground poor drainage often led to flooding and the mine executive eventually issued miners with “gumboots” or “wellies”- rather than address the flooding . Stamping their feet, ratting their chains and slapping their “gumboot ” became the way miners could communicate hundreds of feet below ground

This history created a unique South African dance form called Gumboot Dancing where the dancers use rhythmic tapping to create a unique sound whilst they dance.
